FARGO—North Dakota's statewide June, 2018 election results presented voters with few, if any, surprises. However, if you take a look into the numbers, you may find a few. Here is a summary of the June, 2018 election results by the numbers.
By the numbers:
- Total votes cast for partisan races: 773,802
- Total votes for Republicans: 502,568 (65%)
- Total votes for Democrats: 264,341 (34%)
- Total votes for Libertarians: 693 (<1%)
- Total votes for write-in candidates: 6,200 (<1%)
Interesting Facts:
- Republican Secretary of State candidate Will Gardner faced the highest percentage of write-in votes among all statewide races. In total, 3,827 voters casted a write-in vote for the Republican seat for North Dakota Secretary of State. The 3,827 votes equates to 6.61 percent of all votes casted in the race for the Republican seat.
- In the 2016 general election, 63 percent of North Dakotans voted for then-presidential candidate Donald J. Trump. In the same election, only 27 percent of North Dakota voters voted for then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. In the June, 2018 primary election, 65 percent of North Dakota voters voted Republican, while 34 percent voted Democrat.
- In the 2016 general election, Rep. Kevin Cramer was elected to Congress after garnering 69 percent of the vote in North Dakota. Cramer's Democratic opponent, Chase Iron Eyes, garnered 24 percent of the vote.
- In the 2012 general election, then-Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp defeated Republican foe Rick Berg by a narrow margin of 50 percent to 49 percent. In the June, 2018 primary election for U.S. Senate, North Dakota Democratic candidates received 34 percent of all votes.
