The mixed-use area on northern Sheyenne Street that the city of West Fargo has helped develop in hopes of creating a "downtown atmosphere" will now be known as The Yards on Sheyenne.
The West Fargo City Commission passed the rebranding of the area at its meeting Monday, Aug. 3.
The area will extend from First Avenue North West to Seventh Avenue Southwest and from Center Street west to Francis Street. Often considered West Fargo's downtown, the area includes mixed-use complexes and small businesses as well as the city's POW/MIA Plaza, which is next door to the VFW.
"Most of the time when you say downtown, people think of Fargo," Commissioner Eric Gjerdevig said. "I'm a huge proponent of having a name that is uniquely ours."
The Yards on Sheyenne was created after numerous input sessions from community members, businesses and residents.
Communications Director Melissa Richard said the name was chosen as a nod to West Fargo's long history of being home to the stockyards.
