Clean Up Week, the annual citywide event to clear properties of unwanted items, will return Monday, Sept. 14, through Friday, Sept. 18.
The City of West Fargo is urging residents to haul appliances to the Transfer Station free of charge for disposal for a limited time as of Aug. 31. Additional household large items can also be brought to the Transfer Station at no cost to residents.
Also, residents are asked to begin setting a few large items and extra garbage curbside on their garbage day through Friday, Sept. 11, for collection leading up to Clean Up Week. Items should be placed curbside at 4 p.m. the day prior to garbage collection.
Clean Up Week, which usually occurs in early May, was moved to September due to the coronavirus pandemic. During a normal Clean Up Week, additional staff and sanitation equipment would be utilized to clear massive amounts of household items placed out by residents. Due to ongoing impacts of COVID-19 and the beginning of the school year, staff and equipment will be slightly reduced during this year’s Clean Up Week.
“If everyone placed 1 or 2 extra items out and hauled material to the Transfer Station in the weeks leading up Clean Up Week it will greatly help us keep up,” said Sanitation Manager Logan Jacobson in a release. “It will also help us continue to practice our COVID-19 safety strategies for protecting our employees.”
The Transfer Station, at 1620 Main Ave. W., is open Monday through Saturday throughout the year to accept West Fargo residents’ extra garbage, recycling, yard waste, branches and large items free of charge. After Sept. 18, residents can continue to dispose of appliances there for a $10 fee.
No matter the time of year, there are a few items that can never be disposed of curbside. For example, household hazardous wastes such as paints, oils and varnishes must be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 606 43 1/2 St N, Fargo. Grass clippings, branches, compost materials and other organic materials must be brought to one of the three yard waste disposal sites in West Fargo.
During Clean Up Week, there are changes to branch and construction debris collection as well. There will be no branch collection during the week, as the truck is utilized to haul large, curbside items. Construction debris, which is normally prohibited from curbside collection, will be permitted during the week.
