West Fargo road construction projects to begin, speed limit reduced on I-94
WEST FARGO – Two major road construction projects are about to begin, and likely will disrupt traffic on major roadways:
24th Avenue West and 38th Avenue West intersections set to close to Sheyenne Street traffic Monday.
32nd Avenue West and Sheyenne Street driving lane reductions now to begin April 29.
Starting, Monday April 22, work to complete the last year of the major interchange reconstruction project at Sheyenne Street exit will begin.
Initially, eastbound and westbound Interstate-94 traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction for about 1 mile surrounding the Sheyenne Street interchange. Crews will complete setting concrete barriers and temporary pavement markings throughout first part of the week, weather permitting.
By the end of next week, eastbound and westbound I-94 traffic will shift to head-to-head with one lane in each direction on the westbound side of the interstate. Motorists will remain in this driving pattern on the interstate until work is complete on the eastbound bridge in late fall. Speeds on I-94 will be reduced to 45 mph on the interstate and 25 mph on the interstate ramps.
During the head-to-head traffic control, access to Sheyenne Street will be maintained by the following routes:
Westbound to south on Sheyenne Street (346-A): Drive over the I-94 bridge to use the new westbound loop ramp to only travel south.
Westbound to north on Sheyenne Street (346-B): Use the westbound off-ramp to only travel north. A temporary northeast exit-ramp will be used to travel northbound on Sheyenne Street to complete the tie-in to Sheyenne Street at the start of the project work.
Eastbound to north and south on Sheyenne Street (346): Use the existing ramp through the duration of the project.
Sheyenne Street drivers will be carried in a single lane of traffic north and south under the I-94 bridge between East Beaton Drive to Christianson Drive.
Once traffic is carried on the same side of the interstate, crews will begin to demolish the existing eastbound bridge and reconstruct the remaining ramps needed for the new modified single point urban interchange design, which will move double lanes of traffic through one stoplight in the middle of the interchange when interchange design is complete at Sheyenne Street exit. Throughout the second-year of project work, crews will install or build the remaining infrastructure to complete the new interchange design:
Eastbound Sheyenne Street bridge.
Three additional interchange on and off ramps.
Extend interchange ramp connections.
Reconstruct Sheyenne Street under the bridges between East Beaton Drive to Christensen Drive to two driving lanes plus turn lanes in each direction.
Throughout the first year, crews completed the installation of the new underground utilities and built a portion of the interchange structures:
Westbound I-94 bridge.
Westbound loop ramp to Sheyenne Street.
Westbound on-ramp to I-94.
Westbound off-ramp to Sheyenne Street.
Pedestrian box culvert under northeast quadrant of interchange.
Storm sewer lift station.
Underground utilities for water, storm and sanitary to connect to city systems.
32nd Avenue West/Sheyenne Street
Due to the amount of frost still in the intersection, crews will not impact traffic at the 32nd Avenue West intersection next week as scheduled and have pushed back traffic impacts on 32nd Avenue to begin Monday, April 29, weather permitting.
The city of West Fargo Sheyenne Street reconstruction drivers between Beaton Drive and 40th Avenue West will still encounter side street access changes at 24th Avenue West and 38th Avenues West Monday, April 22.
After 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 22, motorists should plan for the following access changes in Segment 2 and 3 project limits:
Sheyenne Street Segment 2: Beaton Drive to 32nd Avenue West.
Intersection closed: 24th Avenue West and Sheyenne Street intersection will close to access Sheyenne Street. Traffic will shift to the east side of the roadway between the Sheyenne Diversion channel bridge to 26th Avenue West intersection.
Sheyenne Street Segment 3: 32nd Avenue West to 40th Avenue West.
Intersection closure: 38th Avenue W. will close to through traffic using Sheyenne Street to cross over to the west side of the roadway. Local traffic will continue to use the frontage road and continue to 37th Avenue East to enter the stretch of Sheyenne Street open to local access from south of 32nd Avenue West intersection. This closure will allow crews to begin roadway removals and installs within the intersection of 38th Avenue West and Sheyenne Street.
Intersection open: 40th Avenue West and Sheyenne Street intersection remains open to east and west traffic with one lane in each direction. A final determination has not been made on whether this intersection will remain open for east and west traffic during the reconstruction.
The following week, starting after 9 a.m. Monday, April 29, motorists should plan for the following access changes in Segment 2 project limits:
Sheyenne Street Segment 2: Beaton Drive to 32nd Avenue West.
Reduced lanes: 32nd Avenue W. intersection traffic will shift to the northside with one lane in each direction. Crews will begin the remaining underground and installation of permanent traffic signals in the southeast and southwest quadrants. Local access will continue to use 32nd Avenue West and Sheyenne Street intersection to travel south to side streets.
Traffic detours include:
40th Avenue West west to Ninth St West, north to 32nd Avenue West and east to Sheyenne Street.
52nd Avenue West west to Ninth Street West, north to 40th Avenue West or 32nd Avenue West to east to Sheyenne Street.
40th Avenue West east to Veterans Boulevard, north to 32nd Avenue West and west to Sheyenne Street.
Southbound Sheyenne Street, east 52nd Avenue West to north Veterans Boulevard.
From 9 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 25, area residents and businesses are encouraged to attend the biweekly Southwest Metro Work Zones public information meeting at the West Fargo Sports Arena, 520 32nd Ave. W.
Along with attendees receiving Sheyenne Street Segment 2 and 3 updates, project representatives will be present from the several adjacent work zones that may impact alternative routes.
