The winter of 2017-18 was not particularly hard or stormy like this winter has been, but back then we hit a cold and snowy stretch during March and early April that left us with winter snow still covering the ground well into April.
In fact, one year ago today was the first day in four months without continuous the ground being covered in snow. Many people were exasperated about having to be dealing with winter weather halfway into spring.
This winter has been a much tougher winter with all the blizzards, the bitter cold and the flood. Thursday's blizzard was a knockout punch, coming during the peak of the flood and just as the last of the winter snow had finally melted.
However, we should keep in mind that we live in the Northern Plains, a region well known for its harsh climate. We don't have to like it, but we shouldn't be so surprised when winter lingers into spring.
