Heat wave to hit Red River Valley Saturday

A heat wave will be hitting the Red River Valley Saturday afternoon with the potential for storms in the evening.
Nearly the entire eastern half of North Dakota and the far western side of Minnesota are under a heat advisory from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
While temperatures will likely be in the low to mid-90s, dewpoints in the 70s will bring heat index values into the triple digits, according to the National Weather Service.
The heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure to the outdoors.
Late Saturday evening thunderstorms, some severe, are expected to develop across central North Dakota and spread east through the overnight into Sunday morning, the NWS said. Hail up to 2 inches with winds up to 75 mph will be the primary threats along with excessive rainfall or localized flooding.
A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible.
The NWS notes that people should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.
People should also take extra precautions if they work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, faintness, dizziness, fatigue, a rapid weak pulse, muscle cramps, nausea and headache. Symptoms of heat stroke can include high body temperature, altered mental state or behavior, lack of sweating, nausea and vomiting, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate and a throbbing headache.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. If you think a person may be experiencing heat stroke, seek immediate medical help.
Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
