West Fargo man sentenced to two years for sex with a minor

Chad Francis Gourneau

FARGO — A West Fargo man who was 19 when he pleaded guilty in April to having sex with a 13-year-old girl was sentenced Monday, Aug. 27, in Cass County District Court.

Chad F. Gourneau was sentenced to two years on one count of gross sexual imposition. He will spend five years on supervised probation and will have to register as a sex offender.

Gourneau is also required to pay more than $1,000 in fees.

He was charged in November 2017 and told police he had been living at the girl's home since November 2016, court documents stated.

He told police he thought the girl was 16 when they began to have a sexual relationship but later discovered she was 13, court documents show.

The girl's mother, who the Forum isn't naming in order to protect the girl's identity, was charged in October 2017 with a felony count of child neglect. In April, she entered an Alford Plea to a misdemeanor count of contributing to the deprivation of a minor. With an Alford Plea, a defendant doesn't admit guilt but acknowledges a judge or jury could find them guilty beyond a reasonable doubt given the evidence.

According to court documents, the girl's mother knew Gourneau was having sex with her daughter but let them share a bed.

Court records show the mother was to serve a year of unsupervised probation.
