Illinois man sentenced for scamming over $100,000 from Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota
FARGO — An Illinois man was sentenced Monday, Jan. 28, to about six months in jail for allegedly defrauding Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota out of more than $100,000.
Sheryar Masud, of St. Charles, Ill., entered an Alford plea at Monday’s hearing, and Cass County District Judge Tom Olson sentenced him on a felony count of insurance fraud to serve 190 days in jail followed by one year of probation.
With an Alford plea, a defendant doesn’t admit guilt but acknowledges there is enough evidence for a judge or jury to find them guilty.
Masud, who's either 50 or 51, must pay about $250,000 in restitution to Blue Cross.
Charging documents said Masud submitted invalid insurance claims between August 2014 and June 2015.
