FARGO — Police officers responded about noon Friday, April 19, to an apartment complex for a report of a deceased man. He was the same man who prompted a large police response Thursday night after barricading himself in an apartment, according to Fargo police.

At 7:06 p.m. Thursday, police were sent to the Cheyenne Estates apartment complex, 1033 43rd ½ St. S., on reports of a man with a gun who threatened to hurt himself.

Property management had evacuated the apartment complex by the time police arrived. Officers, some carrying long guns and wearing helmets, positioned themselves in the building's parking lot.

Police believed the man was alone in the unit, and there didn’t appear to be any danger to the public, police spokeswoman Jessica Schindeldecker said in a Thursday night news conference. Authorities didn’t know why the man, whom police had described as armed and suicidal, barricaded himself in the unit.

Police failed to get in touch with the man over several hours and, having exhausted all available options, decided the best course of action was to leave the scene. Shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday, police called off efforts to contact the man.

"As to why we left last night, sometimes it’s important to not escalate a situation with a presence or force an encounter for the well being of all involved," Schindeldecker told The Forum, adding that the man's family was comfortable with that decision.

At 12:08 p.m. Friday, police were sent back to the same apartment unit after receiving a report of a deceased man.

“Our condolences go out to his family during this difficult time,” police said in a statement. “We ask that you please respect the privacy of his family and friends as they grieve their loss.”

Police said the matter is under investigation and that no further information would be released at this time.
