FARGO - Tanner Hanson and Cameron Cook each earned three-set victories in a state qualifying match, and West Fargo Sheyenne punched its ticket to the boys tennis state tournament with a 3-2 win over Fargo Shanley in an East Region state qualifier Thursday.
Hansen rebounded from a 6-3 opening-set loss, rallying to top Jacob Jelinski 7-5, 6-3 in the final two sets at No. 2 singles. At No. 3, Cook earned a dominant 6-1 win over Kai Pierce in the decisive third set.
Clinching the win at No. 1 doubles, Kyle Toy and Kamden Coles earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tyler Anderson and Sam Carlson.
Cook and Coles also earned wins at No. 2 and 3 singles respectively, while Toy and Kamden Bear earned a No. 1 doubles win, as Sheyenne advanced with a 3-2 win over Fargo Davies in their opening match of the day.
In the day's second match, the Mustangs fell 5-0 to Grand Forks Central. The Knights topped in-city rival Red River 4-1 in the championship round, securing their first region title since 1995.
