GRAND FORKS - A runner-up performance by Jacob Knodle highlighted a third-place finish by West Fargo Sheyenne at the Eastern Dakota Conference Boys Cross Country Championships Saturday.
The Mustang finished with a score of 103. Grand Forks Red River, which placed four runners in the top-10, won with 31 points, while Fargo North was second with 52.
Knodle, the eighth-ranked runner in Class A, finished in 16:40.4. He was just 1.5 seconds behind Fargo North's Alex Luz, the state's second-ranked runner.
Aiden Johnson also placed in the top-20 for Sheyenne, finishing 17th in 17:34.7.
West Fargo took sixth in the 10-team race with a score of 144.
The Packers were led by Braxton Bruer, who ran a 17:17.8 to place eighth. They also got top-20 finishes from Aiden Biwer (13th, 17:31.2) and Noah Vaagene (19th, 17:38.5)
In the girl's race, Hope Pringle ran a 19:39.7, taking third overall for third-place West Fargo.
The Packers were five points behind runner-up Grand Forks Central with 91. With five runners in the top-10, Class A No. 1 Fargo Davies won comfortably with 29 points. Top Eagle runner Megan Lundstrom crossed the finish line in first, running a 19:20.2.
Kaelyn Berg took 14th in 20:30.0 for the Packers, while Paige Erbstoesser was one spot behind in 20:34.6.
In seventh-place, Sheyenne ended the day with 238 points.
Onnica Stansbury nabbed a top-10 finish for the Mustangs, taking eighth in 20:07.8.
Runners now get a two-week break leading into the state tournament, which begins at 11 a.m. at the Parkhurst Recreation Area in Jamestown on Saturday, Oct. 27.
