FARGO - A furious 16-point rally wasn't enough for West Fargo Sheyenne, which dropped a wild 75-73 overtime final to Grand Forks Red River in a state qualifier Saturday.
The Mustangs fell behind by double figures for nearly 15 game minutes and didn't lead in the second half, but still looked to be in line to reach the sate tournament late in regulation. Tied at 56 with 1.8 seconds left, Christian Kuntz got a clean look off an in bounds pass, only to have his game-winning attempt roll in and out.
"We had a good play call. I had complete confidence (it would go in), Kuntz said of the final shot. "I got a wide open look, we ran it perfect. It just didn't go down."
The Rough Riders then took the lead for good when Jackson Feller hit his only field goal of the game from 3-point range on the opening possession of overtime. Red River led by as many as seven and scored on every possession of the extra period.
Kuntz gave the Mustangs a chance again in overtime. Down 78-74, he made a contested layup and drew a foul with 1.8 seconds remaining. After he deliberately missed the free throw, teammate Chuck DuBois chased down the loose ball in the corner and got a shot off before the buzzer. Unfortunately for Sheyenne, it fell short.
Kuntz led Sheyenne with 19 points in a game that featured 67 foul calls.
Blade Berg (17) and Zion Dettmann (14) also scored in double figures for the Mustangs, while Tyler Terhark had a game-high nine rebounds.
"We dug ourselves a hole," Mustang coach Tom Kirchoffner said. "We get punched in the mouth and sometimes we don't attack right away. They got after us right away. But I'm proud of our guys. They didn't quit. That would have been the easy thing to do."
Sheyenne, the Class A runner-up a season ago, finishes the year 19-5.
