Sheyenne topped its crosstown rival West Fargo in a midseason girls swimming and diving dual on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The Mustangs posted the top spots in eight of the competition’s 12 events at Hulbert Aquatics Center.
The Mustangs finished first in the rivalry event, recording 122 points and nearly doubling the Packers score of 64.
The Mustangs team of Breanna Lund, Lauren McDonagh, Tierney Howell and Madi Yonke captured the 200 medley relay with a swim of 1:52.79. Packers Liv Hettinger, Hannah Potter, Tatum Brooks and Alexis Doeling clocked in less than a second after Sheyenne to take second (1:53.50).
Sheyenne sophomore Greta Bellas earned a first-place finish in the 200 free with a swim of 2:01.65. Fellow sophomores Halee Wersinger took second (2:07.23) for the Mustangs and Packer Anna Montplaisir recorded a third-place finish (2:07.33).
The Mustangs swept the 200-yard individual medley. Lund, a junior, captured the top spot in two minutes, 21.45 seconds. Teammate Bree Triplett followed with a runner-up swim time of 2:22.16. McDonagh took third (2:23.61).
Howell took first in the 50 free for the Mustangs, recording a swim of 25.11. West Fargo’s Hettinger came in just behind, placing second with a time of 25.21.
West Fargo’s Laiken Sturn claimed the top spot in the 1-meter dive, earning six points for the Packers.
West Fargo junior Brooks posted a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a swim of 1:01.11. Howell checked in at second (1:01.72), adding four points for the Mustangs.
Sheyenne claimed 13 points in the 100 free as the top-three finishers were on the Mustangs squad. Yonke, a senior, was the event’s top swimmer, placing first in 56.17. Ninth-graders Madee Shea took second (57.70), and Sam May third (1:00.01).
Sheyenne also swept the 500 freestyle, with Bellas at the top spot (5:19.91), Wersinger finishing second (5:36.22) and eighth-grader Brooklyn Keney posting third (5:46.11).
The 200 freestyle relay was clinched by Mustangs Howell, Triplett, Bellas and Yonke. The key contributing bunch clocked in with a time of 1:44.43. West Fargo’s team of Hettinger, Potter, Montplaisir and Brooks placed second with a swim of 4:15.83.
Hettinger captured the 100-yard backstroke for the Packers; her 1:00.23 swim earning six points for West Fargo.
Brooks (1:10.75) edged Sheyenne’s McDonagh (1:11.31) to cement the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke for the Packers.
To record Sheyenne’s third sweep, the Mustangs recorded the top three finishers in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Triplett, Shea, Lund and Bellas tacked on a first-place finish, clocking in at 3:57.30. The Mustangs second-place squad (May, Bjerke, Haag, Wersinger) came in at 4:07.63, and the third-place Mustangs finished in 4:15.83.
The Packers competed in the NSW Triangular at Fargo North the next day, capturing first place with 232 points. The Spartans were five points shy, recording a second-place finish with a score of 227. Fargo South took third with 88.
The Mustangs next compete in a dual against Fargo Shanley and Wahpeton at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, at Hulbert Aquatics Center.
