Thirty wrestling teams from four states gathered over the weekend to compete at the annual Bismarck Rotary wrestling tournament held at the Bismarck Civic Center on Jan. 10-11.
The Sidney Eagles (Mont.) earned the top spot at the tournament with 213 points, finishing one point higher than runner-up Bismarck High (212), the two-time reigning North Dakota state champions.
The West Fargo Packers punched in a 15th-place finish, tallying 75 points. On the flipside, the West Fargo Sheyenne Mustangs placed 24th.
Freshman Marcus Johnson recorded a fourth-place finish for the Mustangs in the 120-pounds bout, scoring 19 team points for Sheyenne. Bismarck Century’s Kaden DeCoteau defeated Johnson by a 7-4 decision in the third-place match.
Johnson (28-5) posted wins in five of his seven matches at the tournament, defeating Valley City’s Bennett Rogelstad (fall, decision), Moorhead’s Evan Fankhanel (fall), Minot’s Stephen Schulze (major decision) and Dickinson’s Houston Crimmins (decision).
Three West Fargo wrestlers recorded top-10 finishes.
In the 126-pounds bout, freshman Tyler Porter (20-12) placed eighth, scoring 9.5 team points for the 15th-place Packers. He fell to Joel Bowman of Jamestown by a 5-1 decision in the seventh-place match.
Tyler won three of his six matches, defeating Moorhead’s Xander Risdal (technical fall), Valley City’s Austin Rogelstad (sudden victory) and Dickinson’s Cullen Murphy (fall).
Tyler’s twin brother, Kaleb, also recorded an eighth-place finish in the 132-pound weight class and scored 13.5 team points at the tournament. Grand Forks Central’s Josh Isassi defeated Kaleb by a 3-0 decision in the seventh-place match.
Kaleb (6-4) posted wins over Valley City’s Espen Kunze (fall), Moorhead’s Zach Fankhanel (technical fall), Napoleon’s (N.D.) Ezekiel Pechtel (fall) and Bismarck St. Mary’s James Richter (fall).
Joel McIntosh was the third Packer to earn an eighth-place finish at the tournament, scoring the Packers 10 team points in the 170-pounds bout. McIntosh (16-10) fell to Moorhead’s Hayden Netland in the seventh-place match by a 3-2 decision.
McIntosh, a senior, posted wins in three of his six matches, defeating Gavin Pihlgren of Grand Forks Central (fall), Bismarck Legacy’s Ethan Mitchell (fall) and Quinn Lindenberg of Napoleon (decision).
Sierra Ramberg (113-pound weight class), Cole Irwin (120-pound weight class), Tanner Nein (138-pound weight class), Declan Genova (152-pound weight class), Ethan Jerome (182-pound weight class), Jacob Bild (195-pound weight class), Ben Anderson (220-pound weight class) and KC Ortiz (285-pound weight class) also chipped in team points for the Packers.
On the other side, Sheyenne’s Carter Zink (106-pounds bout), Morgan Strandberg (113-pounds bout), Kellen Hoornaert (132-pounds bout), Mekhi Dennis (138-pounds bout) and Nick Vetter (285-pounds bout) all added team points for the 24th-place Mustangs.
