Bobcat Company, as part of its partnership with the West Fargo STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program, hosted a group of 12- and 13-year-old students at its primary product facility in Gwinner, N.D., on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

This field trip was one of many opportunities the students involved in STEM have to interact with Bobcat Company employees. Bobcat Company engineers have visited STEM classrooms for “a day in the life” presentations and over the next six months will have additional opportunities to present to students on idea generation, evolving their skills and how their lessons translate into real world application. Students will also have the ability to pair with an engineer for mentoring, and Bobcat Company engineers will participate in Engineering Week festivities and the upcoming STEM Expo.

Eric Dobervich, seventh grade science teacher in West Fargo, explains STEM as a statewide effort that connects education to the real world and prepares students for the 21st century workplace. “This is a paradigm shift in education that teaches students how to work more collaboratively, to be resourceful, become more creative and innovative in their problem-solving and allow them opportunities to actively engage with their communities from a young age.”

The STEM learning approach uses the Engineering Design Process as its foundation; a process that Bobcat Company is extremely familiar with. “Our engineers use this fundamental process daily. As a company, we recognize the need for advanced and innovative thinking, so we want to engage with these students early and provide them additional learning and mentoring opportunities,” said Laura Ness Owens, Bobcat director of communication.
