Carroll L. Orth

Carroll L. Orth, 68, Horace, passed away on January 28, 2010 at MeritCare Hospital Palliative Care Unit. His courageous battle with cancer came to a peaceful close with his family by his side just 8 months after his diagnosis. Carroll was born on March 12, 1941 in rural Lidgerwood, N.D. to Urban and Mathilda (Marohl) Orth. He attended school in Lidgerwood and graduated in 1959. Carroll worked for Illies' Welding Shop from the age of ten through graduation. Carroll served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963, and worked for Hoppert's Plumbing after his discharge. Carroll joined the Fargo Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local #338 and worked for various companies. Regarded among his peers as an extremely talented welder, Carroll taught many of them the art. In the late 1970s he took a temporary withdrawal from the union to form a business partnership called T-O Excavating as well as to instruct welding for the State School of Science in Wahpeton. In 1983 he returned to the trade and worked primarily for Robert Gibb and Sons Plumbing and Heating until his retirement in 2003.

On May 29, 1965 Carroll married his sweetheart Mary Lou (Hill) Orth. Moving to Horace in May 1968, the couple began raising their family and over the years Carroll poured his heart and soul into the renovation of their lifelong home. He loved tending to their spacious yard and garden and could be found constantly tinkering in his garage or basement, usually fixing something. A lifelong member of the Horace Volunteer Fire Department, Carroll was also active in community and church committees. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his kids and grandchildren and loved his family vacations at the lake.

Carroll is survived by his wife Mary Lou; two sons, Mason (Sharon), Miles (Jen); daughter, Mandy (Rick) Gibney; six grandchildren, Michael, Aleasha and Julia Orth, Cormac, Nolan and Shaylah Gibney; brother, Dennis Orth; sister, Delphine (Harold) Arme and sister-in-law, Carole Orth. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Randolph, sister-in-law Teri Orth and son Shane.
