The caller identifies himself or herself as a debt collector authorized by the sheriff's office and tells the person taking the call that there's an active warrant for him or her, according to a news release from Sheriff Paul Laney.

The number on the incoming call, (701) 214-6455, appears to be from an international location but has been rerouted into the North Dakota area code, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office isn't affiliated with the group, which is believed to be fraudulent and trying to gain information or money through the call. People are advised not to provide any information to the caller.
