Commission supports school plan

Monday's West Fargo City Commission meeting was fairly cut and dried, but one point of legislation stood out.

In a unanimous vote, the board passed a resolution supporting the West Fargo Public School's planned $82.5 million building bond referendum. The bond goes to a public vote May 24. Failing the past two time, it is the third attempt that the district has brought a building bond forward for public vote.

The information detailing the plan had been presented to the city commission at an earlier date, therefore, during Monday's meeting it was merely a matter of coming to consensus.

The West Fargo School District plan calls for the addition of two new elementary schools and a new middle school. An addition to the Sheyenne Ninth Grade Center will convert it into a high school, while the current high school also will get upgrades to account for the addition of a ninth grade to its student body.

The showing of support by the city commission holds no official weight on the final outcome of the bond referendum; however it does represent the city's formal backing of the school district's growth plans.

The next West Fargo City Commission meeting is slated for 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 2. The next West Fargo School Board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, at the Leidal Education Center, 207 Main Ave W, West Fargo.
