Drivers - start your engines

For some folks, Memorial Day signals the official start to summer.

For others, it's burning rubber and car exhaust.

The newly-revamped Red River Valley Speedway will give the Fargo-Moorhead region a green flag for summer today (Wednesday) during the official opener of its auto racing season.

Fans can expect a lot out of the new-and-improved RRVS, a brainchild of area racing enthusiast Danny Schatz who funded construction costs for the myriad of updates. The biggest change has been shortening the track's length to a three-eighths-mile oval, which promises tighter turns and, ultimately, more excitement.

Race days also were moved from Friday to Wednesday, meaning drivers and fans will have the option to hit several region tracks throughout the week without doubling up on venues.

If anything, today not only marks the start of a new - albeit short - season, but also a new chapter for RRVS.

So hold on tight, because this summer promises to be one wild ride.
