Lyle E. Grossnickle, 56, Durbin, died on Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at the MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. Services were held on Saturday, May 3, at Community Presbyterian Church, West Fargo. Final resting place is at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.
Lyle was born on Jan. 28, 1952, in Fargo, to John and Alma (West) Grossnickle. He grew up on the family farm near Page. In 1958, they moved to West Fargo. He graduated from West Fargo High School in 1971 and was co-captain of the wrestling team.
He attended Wahpeton State School of Science for a year before joining the N.D. Air National Guard. He attended the Air Force Academy in San Antonio, Texas, and was part of the Happy Hooligans for 23 years.
He married Vickie Horn on May 19, 1973, at Community Presbyterian Church in West Fargo. They made their home in Horseshoe Bend Trailer Court before moving to a farm near Durbin. He worked for Ray's Towing in West Fargo and Simonson Lumber. He worked at Lavelle Lumber Company for 28 years. For the last 5 years, he drove truck for Integrity Windows of Fargo.
Lyle was an avid outdoorsman. He loved all creatures great and small. Hunting, fishing, livestock and just being outside was a priority. He was also involved with the Boy Scouts having received the distinction of Eagle Scout.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Vickie; two brothers, James (Deb) Grossnickle of Kindred, and Charles Grossnickle of Rollag, Minn.; sister-in-law, Janice Grossnickle of West Fargo; numerous nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Delores Horn of West Fargo; sister-in-law, Kristi (Damien) Dixon of Kansas City, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, LeRoy Horn; and best friend, Steven Olson.
