Marshall new director of economic development
Matthew Marshall assumed duties Monday as the new Director of Economic Development and Community Services for the city of West Fargo. He fills the position left open by the departure of Mark Vaux in March who joined the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation.
Originally from Mahtomedi, Minn., Marshall received his bachelors degree in business management and economics from the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. He most recently lived in Lindstrom, Minn. where he was Director of Sales at Golden Shovel Agency, working with economic development groups across the country on marketing communications, strategic planning, grant writing and other economic development functions.
Prior to that he served as director of operations at Redlin Electric, an electrical company in the Twin Cities metro area. It was there that Marshall ran a business that made him "an effective practitioner of economic development. Having that experience allows me to communicate effectively to the businesses and local stakeholders that I work with," he stated.
That attribute will now serve him well in his West Fargo responsibilities which will focus on planning, directing, and managing the city's economic development and redevelopment programs as well as community services and other areas as directed.
Also complimenting his position will be his professional connections as a member of the Mid American Economic Development Council, the Southeast Development Council and several other business organizations.
He said he is excited about his new West Fargo endeavor and the possibilities and challenges it will present. "I have had the opportunity to travel across the country and work with many economic development groups. In the process, I learned about what those local economies are going through, the problems they face, what makes them unique, and the strategies they are using to improve that situation. I can truly say that the diverse economy, fabulous demographics and geographic location make West Fargo a gem in America that is truly one-of-a-kind. Having that perspective will allow me to sell our strengths to businesses looking to locate or expand within the city."
He and his wife, Rebecca are the parents of a seven month-old son, August.
Marshall said the attractiveness of West Fargo's small town way-of-life played a big part in the decision to relocate to West Fargo. "My wife and I are excited to move to the area and to get involved in the community."
The local landscape will also provide a great opportunity to enjoy a variety of hobbies which include hunting, fishing and camping.
West Fargo city officials way they are happy to have Marshall joining their team. Mayor Rich Mattern said that "Matt will have some big shoes to fill in replacing Mark (Vaux); however, Matt has a diverse community and economic development background that will fit well with the growth we are seeing in West Fargo. He also knows businesses having worked with his dad in an electrical contracting company while he was growing up. When you add up all of his skills, along with his pleasant personality, I believe he will be a great addition to our city."
City Administrator Jim Brownlee offered similar sentiments. "Matt is a great addition to West Fargo. His background in working with governments of all sizes with his previous employer and his background in private business bring a broad range of experiences to the city. I am sure he will do a great job for us."
