Former Leonard, N.D., resident Opal A. Sandvig, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes.
Opal Agnes Johnson was born to Bernard and Alice (McKay) Johnson on Nov. 11, 1921 near McCleod, N.D. She married Elner Sandvig on Dec. 26, 1940 in Moorhead. They farmed near Sheldon, N.D., and later moved to Leonard, where they both worked at the Leonard School. Elner died in 1972. Opal lived in Fargo and West Fargo for a number of years. She moved to Lincoln Park in Detroit Lakes in 2003, and became a resident of St. Mary's Nursing Center in 2005.
Opal will be remembered for her lefse, divinity, popcorn balls, angel food cake, and most of all for her generosity toward others.
Surviving Opal are her son, Arlo (Karin) Sandvig of Audubon; daughter-in-law, Sonia Sandvig of West Fargo; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren and a sister, Edith Sandvig of Enderlin, N.D.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Elner; son, Rolly Sandvig; sister, Eleanor Olson; and a brother, Laurus Johnson.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at Leonard Lutheran Church in Leonard, N.D. Visitation will be held from 12-2 p.m. at the church, prior to the service. Burial will be at the Leonard Cemetery.
