Packers advance to State
If you are a diehard Packer fan, the volleyball team is the last fall-sport team left to root for. They came out of the East Region Volleyball Tournament with the No. 3 seed, earning a spot in the state tournament this weekend.
The team went into the tournament ranked fifth in the Eastern Dakota Conference.
In their match against the fourth-ranked Fargo Davies Eagles on Tuesday, Amanda Levin (who also had 12 digs) and Courtney Suppa both had 17 kills to lead the Packers to a 3-2 (25-11, 22-25, 26-24, 18-25, 16-14) victory.
Christina Bruenjes was not far behind with 13 kills, and Andrea Klug managed 42 assists.
With the victory, the Packers moved on the faced the top-seeded Fargo Shanley on Friday, but fell to the deacons 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 16-25, 23-25).
Klug tallied 40 assists in the loss, and Suppa had 15 kills and two aces. Bruenjes and Levin managed 12 and 11 kills respectively.
Libero Jolene Woodbury totaled 10 digs.
The Packers went on to face the sixth-seeded Wahpeton Huskies on Saturday in the third place game, and managed to sweep them (25-21, 25-16, 25-17) to secure their place in the state tournament.
Klug led the team, once again, with 34 assists and eight digs.
Shelby Gustafson led the team in kills with 10. Levin and Suppa were not far behind with nine each. Bruenjes tallied seven kills, along with four blocks.
The Packers now head to Minot tomorrow afternoon to face Jamestown, the No. 2 team from the west, at 2 p.m. They will also have a game on Friday and Saturday, with times depending on the outcome of the previous day's game.
