Dr. San Juana Bruce Mendoza of Juarez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas will be speaking at Faith Lutheran Church on Thursday, October 8, at 6:30 p.m., 127 2nd Ave. W., West Fargo.
Mendoza is a beloved physician who has dedicated her life to serving the poorest of the poor in Juarez and Anapra, Mexico. She established the Cristo Rey Primary Care Clinic on land that is a reclaimed garbage dump and is home to thousands of struggling families.
"Some time ago I came to visit the great city of Juarez," said Mendoza. "Here we visited the great area that was the city garbage dump. There were heaps, mountains of garbage, and many, many people and children sorting through all of the refuse that the trucks brought there."
Mendoza will speak about her experiences as a doctor working on the southern United States-Mexico border. She will also speak at MeritCare Broadway at noon on October 8, the Presentation Prayer Center at 7 p.m. on October 9, at Olivet Lutheran at 9:45 a.m. on October 10, at St. Francis de Sales at 3 p.m. on October 10, and at the U-Night All-City Worship Gathering at Gio's Pizzeria 123 21st St. S., Moorhead, at 7 p.m. on October 10.
Mendoza's trip is sponsored by Abriendo Fronteras - Opening Borders which organizes mission trips and experiential travel for area churches, student groups, and other organizations. Healthcare mission trips are planned for next March and June 2010 to assist Mendoza at her clinic. For more information, check out the Web site at www.openingborders.com.
