Schmidt resigns from WF Police Department
West Fargo Police Officer Allen Schmidt resigned from the West Fargo Police Department effective Tuesday, Jan. 3. Schmidt was off-duty when he was arrested in Fargo on Dec. 14 and charged with simple assault. The charge was later amended to disorderly conduct. Schmidt has been on paid administrative leave since his arrest.
West Fargo Police Chief Arland Rasmussen called the resignation unfortunate. Rasmussen said "When an officer raises their right hand to take their oath of office, they agree to live by the higher standard set by the law officer's code of ethics. That code is the foundation by which the public's trust in law enforcement is rooted. Any conduct, on or off-duty, which violates the code of ethics can damage that trust and is a very serious matter."
Schmidt joined the West Fargo Police Department in June of 1995. He worked as a patrol officer and most recently as a narcotics investigator. Schmidt had also conducted on-line investigations targeting sexual predators. He had been recognized several times by his peers and criminal prosecutors for the successful prosecution of cases relating to on-line predators and narcotics investigations.
A press conference was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at the West Fargo Police Department to further address the matter. Information from this session was unavailable as it was after publication press time.
