The West Fargo Senior Committee held a free picnic event for area seniors at Elmwood Park in West Fargo on June 18 with attendance at just over 100 people. Participants were treated to a meal prepared by NDSU; were eligible for door prizes and heard a short presentation on what the senior program has to offer. Funding for the event was provided by Gate City Bank and Swanson Health Products. Donated items and services were received from Gate City Bank, Western State Bank, Petro Serve USA and the Farmers Market.

Committee member Frank Lenzmeier said the event was a success. "As a committee, we had a chance to tell people about what the West Fargo Senior Program can offer to seniors in the community. I saw the familiar faces of those who currently participate in the program, but I also saw many people who have not previously attended a noon meal event." Lenzmeier said he hoped Tuesday's picnic will encourage more people to enjoy the companionship and take part in the activities.

Deb Olson of Western State Bank also sits on the committee and assisted with the picnic. Olson said it appeared those in attendance had a great time. "It is important for seniors in our community to have resources like the West Fargo Senior Program where they can come together to enjoy a meal and to interact with other seniors." Olson said most people have senior parents or know seniors that can benefit from this type of program. She encourages all who are eligible to give the program a try.

The West Fargo Senior Program meets Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, at Faith Lutheran Church, 127 2nd Ave E, West Fargo, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Meals are served at noon with entertainment following the meal. Call 356-2047 to reserve a meal 24 hours prior to attending. Meals for the following days can also be reserved on sight through the use of a sign-up sheet. Those wishing to participate but needing transportation can call Valley Senior Services 356-7433 to arrange for a ride.

The West Fargo Senior Program is made possible through a partnership of the City of West Fargo, Valley Senior Services, Faith Lutheran Church, West Fargo Public Library and the West Fargo Senior Committee.
