South side substation ready to respond
West Fargo Fire and Police Departments now have a presence at the new Southside Substation located off of Sheyenne Street at 445 29th Ave. W.
Work on the building has progressed to the point where fire department and police personnel were able to move in trucks and other minimal equipment last week, making for a functional facility.
West Fargo Fire Chief Roy Schatschneider said there is a considerable amount of work remaining that needs to be completed by the contractor and the staff. "There is a lot of finishing up we have to do, adding some cabinets, storage, etc.; and a lot of outside work will also need to be completed once the ground dries up, including installing a flagpole and landscaping."
The building is not yet staffed, but there is a buzzer at the north entrance that the public can use if they need something. The buzzer will notify anybody on the inside of anyone's seeking assistance and if the building is unoccupied, there is a red phone on the wall individuals can use that connects them directly with central dispatch.
Schatschneider said the First Street fire station will still be the main headquarters, but personnel closest to the new facility will be responding to that location when calls are received, utilizing the truck and equipment there, making for a quicker response time on the southern end of the city. Once the location is totally established, consideration will be given to staffing on a regular basis.
The police department has also moved in some computers and desks in their office space and has the necessary paperwork on hand so police officers can fill out reports without having to return to the main station on 4th Avenue East. Eventually, they will also have garage space and, in the future, possibly a receptionist located there.
The original headquarters for the fire department is located at 106 1st St. E., while the Police Department is located in West Fargo City Hall at 800 4th Ave. E.
