"Does my Generation have a Role in America's Future?" is the theme of the 2010-2011 VFW and Auxiliary Voice of Democracy program, open to all students in grades 9-12, enrolled in public, private, parochial or home schools. Students are competing for up to $30,000 for the Voice of Democracy Scholarship.
"Does Patriotism Still Matter? is the theme of the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Patriot's Pen program, which is open to all students in grades 6-8. Last year the North Dakota first place winner took seventh place at the national level and won $3,500.
The students are required to write an essay pertaining to the theme, 3 to 5 minutes in length for Voice of Democracy (written and recorded) and 300-400 words for Patriot's Pen. Awards are given locally, with additional awards at the district, state and national levels.
VFW honors America's Teachers' is a program that recognizes teachers who promote patriotism and pride of country. There are three categories: K-5; 6-8 and 9-12. Teachers can be nominated by fellow teachers or by the public. These contests are "core" programs of the VFW and Auxiliary and parents and teachers are urged to encourage participation of all students. The deadline for local competition is Nov. 1.
