Joe Sykora was the business manager for the Jamestown school system for twelve years before he accepted his position as business manager for the West Fargo School District starting July 1st. He wore many hats in Jamestown. Along with overseeing the budget, he also served as acting assistant superintendent for the Jamestown school district for the past two years, gaining a well-rounded knowledge working with buildings and grounds, food services, technology, district personnel and building projects that he feels will help him in his new position in West Fargo.

Sykora started out as a math teacher and coach in South Dakota and served as the technology coordinator for two years at the Standing Rock Bureau of Indian Affairs Schools in Fort Yates, S.D. He later accepted a position as an elementary technology specialist for the Jamestown school district for half a year, before becoming business manager there. Claiming to have tendencies toward being a workaholic, Sykora says he enjoyed the challenges and the wide diversity that went with his job in Jamestown, but he welcomes the opportunity to concentrate on being primarily a business manager for a change.

"West Fargo Public Schools has a budget of approximately 82 million dollars and it will be nice to be able to focus on a specific area," Sykora said.

"I look forward to the opportunity of establishing residency in the West Fargo area and getting more involved in the community, getting to know the staff at West Fargo Schools, and working with the school board," Sykora added.

Currently, Sykora is still living in Jamestown, but he and his wife, Jennifer, are looking for a house, preferably in West Fargo. Jennifer is a stay-at-home mom, taking care of their two sons, ages two months and two-and-a-half.

Sykora graduated from high school in Browns Valley, Minn. He went on to earn a bachelors of science degree in math from South Dakota State University-Brookings, and a masters degree in business administration from the University of South Dakota. He is in the middle of working on his doctorate degree at North Dakota State University.

Sykora was actively involved with the United Way for eight years in Jamestown, and was a member of the all-male Jamestown Choralaries singing goup for five years. Once he gets settled, he hopes to get involved with community organizations again.

Superintendent Dana Diesel Wallace has been impressed with Sykora's qualifications. "He is very accomplished and was respected as a businessman in the Jamestown community," Wallace said.

"He's hit the ground running, coming in one of the busiest times of the year. I think that speaks volumes. He pulled together a good team to come up with a sound budget, and has brought a fresh perspective to it," Wallace added.
