The West Fargo girls soccer team had a shot at one of the coveted spots to represent the East Region during this weekend's Class A state tournament in Grand Forks.
But in the end, a fluke play and unlucky bounce cost the Packers a win and a berth.
After upending Grand Forks Red River 1-0 on Tuesday, courtesy of a Lauren Johnson penalty kick, West Fargo was set to face Fargo North in their final game of the regular season.
Then the unthinkable happened: West Fargo scored Fargo North's only goal of the game for them.
According to reports, a West Fargo defender attempted to return the ball to midfield after it was shot at her by an opposing player. Instead of sailing free and clear, however, the ball deflected off a defender and into the Packers' goal.
North punched their ticket to state as the No. 3 seed with the 1-0 win. The Packers finished the season 7-7 in conference play and 8-8-2 overall.
Boys golf EDC meet today
The West Fargo boys golf team's season is nearly complete. All that remains are those little details of conference and state tournaments.
They have a good shot at making waves in the following weeks, too, after accumulating four conference wins, one runner-up finish and one third-place finish during the regular season to lead the EDC.
The Packers also boast three players with averages ranked in the EDC Top 10, including No. 1 Connor Holland (72.33 strokes), No. 3 Riley Johnson (74.17), and No. 10 Payton Johnson (78.33).
The East Region meet kicks off at 9 a.m. today at Edgewood Golf Course. The state tournament runs June 5-6 at Heart River Golf Course in Dickinson.
