The annual VFW Volunteer Recognition and Awards banquet was held April 27, at the West Fargo VFW with a variety of awards presented.

They included: Patriotic Art Awards to Shannan Gorden for first place, Signe Swanson for second place, and Elizabeth Grefsrud for third place; Voice of Democracy Awards to Lance Wilson for first place; Brook Rheault for second place, and Nick Reitan for third place; and Patriot Pen Awards to Cody Eisenbeisz for first place, Natalie Shea for second place and Matthew Keller for third place. 

Rachel Heggen, a teacher at West Fargo High School, won the National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. 

The theme for the 2011-12 for Voice of Democracy contest open to students in grades night through 12 is "Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military." The theme for Patriots Pen, open to grades six through eight is "Are Your Proud of Your Country?"

Students are encouraged to submit an entry. There are prizes at the local level, with additional awards/prizes if the entry wins and advances on to the state and national levels.
