Each year, the West Fargo Scouts collect food to fill the shelves of the Emergency Food Pantry. Last year, 22,221 pounds of food was collected by the Fargo-Moorhead, West Fargo-Horace area scouts during the Scouting Food Drive, with West Fargo-Horace Scouts collecting 8,456 pounds of that total.

Organizers view the drive as a marvelous way to do a "good turn" for those less fortunate in the community and are thankful to everyone who has contributed in the past to help make the drive the success that it has grown into.

On that note, Scouting for Food is scheduled to start on March 20, and will be coordinated the same way as last year with the scouts placing door hangers, as a reminder of the drive, on each house, instead of plastic bags used in the past. During the week, citizens can place the food in a bag of their choice to have ready for March 27th, when the scouts will return to pick up the bags of food.

Food donations can also be taken to the West Fargo Sunmart parking lot at 1100 13th Ave. E., from 9 a.m. to noon, on March 27, where a truck will be positioned to accept the contributions. Residents are asked not to include glass containers of food in the bags for the scouts to handle as it could be dangerous.

All donations to the food shelves in March are eligible to receive two incentive allocations based on all food dollars raised. The first incentive is from Minnesota FoodShare and the second is from the Alan Feinstein Foundation in New Jersey. This is the only time of year that these incentives are available to food shelves, so everyone's donation automatically becomes more for the food shelf.

The Emergency Food Pantry serviced 20,553 people during the year of 2009, in the Fargo-Moorhead, West Fargo area. "A total of 822,120 pounds of food to 6,162 families, was given away in 2009," stated Linda Clark, coordinator for the Emergency Food Pantry.

Scouts involved in the West Fargo Food Drive are from Pack 228, chartered by the Red River Reformed Church; Pack 232, chartered by the West Fargo VFW, Pack 234, chartered by the West Fargo Exchange Club; Pack 246, chartered by Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church; Pack 274, chartered by Horace Lions Club, Troop 213, chartered by West Fargo Faith Lutheran Church; Troop 232, chartered by the West Fargo VFW; Troop 274 , chartered by the Horace Lutheran Church; and Troop 279, chartered by the West Fargo Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Anyone with questions, if your food bag was missed, or you forgot to put it out, can contact Judy Millar at 282-2492. She will be happy to pick up bags and deliver them to the food pantry. Citizens can also take contributions to the Emergency Food Pantry located at 1438 10th St. N., Fargo.
