WF man dies in plane crash
Thomas Mitchell, 51, West Fargo, died Monday when his experimental plane crashed in a Wisconsin cornfield, according to the Sauk County Sheriff's office.
Chief Deputy Chip Meister said that Mitchell was flying to Merrill to meet his wife when his plane crashed right after taking off from the Sauk Prairie Airport.
Officials said that Mitchell owned the plane, built in 2004, but believed the flight may have been a test run.
Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft flying north about 2 p.m. when a wing began to come apart, followed by the second wing breaking off.
The sheriff's office and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
