The fate of the Red River Valley Speedway will soon be decided.

During a closed meeting Tuesday, Sept. 29, board members discussed possible options for the track, which has come under financial strain as of late.

"We just looked at all of the aspects of it," said Bryan Schulz, Red River Valley Fair general manager. "Do we keep the track and continue to lose money every year? Do we lease the track, or do we go dark?"

After mulling the choices, the board members decided on two options: "Either accept one of the (leasing) proposals, or go dark," Schulz said.

Schulz confirmed that an individual has come forward with a proposal to lease RRVS, but he would not go into any detail except to note the person is from the Fargo-Moorhead area.

Whatever result, a priority will be controlling the financial instability of the racetrack. A report distributed in September revealed a net income of $13,237 as of Sept. 23. However, the report failed to take into account unpaid expenses. According to Schulz, once the bills are tallied, results could reflect a net loss of as much as $30,000 to $40,000.

An open board meeting has been scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Hartl Ag Building at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds. An updated financial report should be available and a vote will be held to decide the Speedway's future.

"We don't want to see it closed, but we can't continue to take a hit every year," Schulz said. "I think the gentleman who wants to take over has a passion for the track and would do a good job."
