Workshop to address parenting of teens
Parents of West Fargo Middle School and High School students are invited to enroll in the nationally recognized Parent Education Series titled "Active Parenting of Teens," which will take place Thursday, Sept. 17, 24 and Oct. 1, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the West Fargo High School Library, 801 9th St. E. Rebecca Berge Buss, LCSW an experienced parent with child development background and training, will serve as instructor. Sponsors are the NDSU Extension, Region V Parenting Resource Center and West Fargo Public Schools.
Developed by Michael H. Popkin, Ph. D, this three week series is based on the philosophy that it is the job of the parent, rather than the teen, to play the leadership role in the family. The class explains that leadership is not a simple matter of laying down the law but much like effective management in a business, which depends on a combination of attitudes and skills. The program is designed to help parents develop both so they can better lead their teen into responsible parenthood.
Session one will focus on The Active Parent: Gaining Cooperation through Communication; session two, Tools for Building Responsibility, Discipline, Courage and Positive Behaviors; and session three, Risky Behaviors: The Problem-Solving Family in Action.
There is no class fee, but there is a $15 cost per family for the workbook, which expands on the ideas presented in the class video, discussion and includes group activities and home assignments.
