Benefit events planned for Cody Marthaller

 A three-day run of special benefit activities are in the works to assist Cody Marthaller, a lifelong West Fargo resident, diagnosed a year ago with a rare form of lung cancer.

Cody, 31, is a 2001 graduate of West Fargo High School. He is engaged to Jordan Jost of West Fargo, who is the West Fargo High School Packatahna coach.

A Spaghetti Feed and Silent Auction will be the first fundraising event taking place Thursday, Sept. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the West Fargo VFW, 308 Sheyenne St. A freewill donation will be taken for the meal which will be served all evening long.

A wide variety of auction items will be featured, including Viking tickets, a kid’s pedal tractor, several gift baskets filled with various products, a hotel stay, a pressure washer, and a host of other gift certificates and items.

Anyone wishing to donate an item can still do so and is encouraged to contact event coordinators, Sheila Hirchert at 701-866-3570 or Jessica Heilman at 701-793-6787. If needed, arrangements can be made to pick up the silent auction donation.

Friday night, Sept. 6, Cody’s family and friends will be hosting an informal get-together social at Bar Nine, located in the Pioneer Center off of 13th Avenue in West Fargo. The event will start around 7 p.m. Organizers plan on auctioning off some additional big ticket items, including an outdoor grill/oven.

A golf event is also set for Saturday, Sept. 7, at Meadows Golf Course, 401 34th St. S., Moorhead with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

Cost will be $75 per golfer, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, and lunch Individual/business hole sponsorships are available for $200, which includes a sign. The event is open to the public and limited to 100 golfers.

Money raised from these two events will be matched up to $5,000 by Dakota Medical Foundation’s Lend-A-Hand program. This program provides fundraising resources, online giving options, and matching funds. For more information about Dakota Medical Foundation and Lend-A-Hand, go to

Those unable to attend the events but would still like to make a donation can do so by stopping in at any Wells Fargo Bank and make a deposit to the “Cody Marthaller Donation Trust” account.

Cody is no longer working and all the proceeds from the events and donations will assist with his medical expenses and related care.

Cody is presently undergoing chemotherapy and will be trying to work around his treatments so he can be in attendance for all or some of the benefit events.

His sister Jessica Heilman, who is coordinating the fundraiser, said “Cody is hoping he can be there,” She added that the whole family is overwhelmed by everyone who’s banded together to help out in any way and that Cody in particular appreciates all the support he’s received.
