Harwood celebrating Community Days

The streets will come alive in Harwood this weekend as residents and businesses alike observe Community Days Friday evening, Sept. 6 and all day Saturday, Sept. 7.

The event promises to be family-oriented packed with something for everyone to take in and enjoy.

The celebration will feature a free movie at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Center for the Children. "Oz the Great and Powerful" will be showing sponsored by the Harwood Park Board.

Activities will also be brisk at the Harwood American Legion and Harwood Hideout. The Legion will offer a pulled pork dinner from 5 to 8 p.m.; a rock auction, rock race and free bingo every half hour from 6 to 8 p.m.; followed by cosmic bingo and cosmic karaoke at 9 p.m. The Hideout will feature $5 burger baskets from 5 to 8 p.m. with families welcome and free pool and darts also offered. Karaoke and a DJ with games and prizes will begin the entertainment at 9 p.m.

A breakfast at the Community Center will begin Saturday's events, served from 7 to 10 a.m. by the Zion Men's Club.

A quilt contest will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Harwood State Bank with a variety of local ladies with an interest in quilting showing off their finished pieces.

Parade entries will line up at 9:30 a.m. at Zion Church in anticipation of the 11 a.m. Parade. No preregistration is required for an entry.

Saturday afternoon events, all from 12:30 to 4 p. m., will feature: concessions by St. Williams at the Community Center; Games Galore, free Watermelon and a Petting Zoo at the Baseball field, sponsored by the Park Board and the Red River Valley Zoo; a Digital Scavenger Hunt, starting at the Community Center, with grand prizes awarded, sponsored by the Harwood 4-H Helpers; water activities and demonstrations in the Community Center area promoted by the Harwood Fire Department; and a car show at the school sponsored by Jerway and Larson Repair. There is no fee or pre-registration, prizes and trophies will be awarded.

Free family entertainment will also be provided from 3 to 5:30 p.m. as Northern Outlaw Wrestling, also sponsored by Jetway, fills the Community Center.

A spaghetti dinner with garlic toast and salad will be served at the Community Center for a freewill donation from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Also featured will be: face painting and balloon animals, a cash bar and Dippin' Dots.

The Community Days festivities will conclude with a family dance at the Community Center from 7 to 11 p.m. with "Hitman Mobile Music" providing the music.
