West Fargo opens investigation of police chief

West Fargo Police Chief Mike Reitan is not expected to return as chief after being placed on administrative leave.

WEST FARGO—The city here has opened an investigation and is preparing an administrative report on embattled Police Chief Mike Reitan's performance.

Reitan was placed on paid administrative leave earlier this month after some members of the Police Department complained that he created a hostile work environment.

City spokeswoman Melissa Richard said city officials are conducting an investigation and will prepare a report when it is finished. A timeline for the finished report has not been released.

The city offered Reitan a three-month severance package. He has until Feb. 3 to decide if he will accept the offer.

Reitan has said the complaints against him took by him surprise and he has not decided if he will accept the offer or ask for his job back. He has hired a private attorney.
