West Fargo VFW 7564 Memorial Day observance honors Hlavaty, Chase

The West Fargo VFW Post 7564 will honor two veterans by raising their honorary flags on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26. There will be a flag raising ceremony dedicated to the memory of Thomas Hlavaty Sr., a World War II Army veteran and longtime member of the West Fargo Post, at 10:30 a.m. at the VFW Club, 308 Sheyenne Street. Hlavaty passed away this year and is survived by his wife, Rose, and son, Thomas Jr.

Following the flag raising, Color Guard members of the VFW, Ladies Auxiliary, AMVETS, and the Boy Scouts will march to Elmwood Park, where the flag will be raised in honor of Navy veteran Louis Chase, a longtime member of the West Fargo Post who passed away last year. The flag being raised was presented to Chase's wife, Ann, at his funeral, and she is a longtime member of the Auxiliary.

A special program will begin at 11 a.m. at the park, featuring memorial addresses by three members of the N.D. Air National Guard, Chief Master Sargeant Mike Reitan, Senior Master Sargeant Michelle Reitan, and Master Sargeant Kim Potter. Brandon Millar will perform musical selections.

Coffee and cookies will be served at the park shelter after the program. The march is open to the public, as is the program at Elmwood.
