Man faces attempted murder for last week's stabbing in Mapleton

A 22-year-old man faces two charges after his arrest for a stabbing last week in Mapleton, N.D.

Nicholas Bruesch was charged today with attempt to commit murder and drug possession.

Bruesch, who was being held on other charges, also had bail raised from $100,000 to $250,000 cash.

During today's court hearing, Leah Viste, the prosecutor handling the attempted murder case, cited Bruesch's lengthy history and "danger to the community" in asking for the higher bail.

Dante Smith, 22, of Fargo, was stabbed Jan. 13 and found refuge at a home in Mapleton.

Smith had been uncooperative in helping investigators piece together the attack, which was reported by a truck driver passing by the scene.

Smith was stabbed once in his liver by a 7-inch knife blade, a wound that left him soaked in blood and screaming for help in the 100 block of Meridian Road when the first 911 call came in.

Previously, Cass County authorities said they wanted to talk to Nicholas Bruesch, a 22-year-old who was living with his father in a house next to the one where Smith found help as he waited for paramedics.

Bruesch has a long criminal history, including at least five assault convictions.
