Online course provides guide to home energy savings

The North Dakota State University Extension Service is offering Home Energy 101, a free web-based course, to provide an introduction to home energy use and a few ways to reduce that energy use in homes.

The course is based on the NDSU Extension publication "Top Ten Home Energy Checklist" and consists of a series of short YouTube video clips, each focusing on a different aspect of home energy use. The course includes interviews with home energy experts, who point out real-life examples of energy being wasted in homes. Also included are some tips and techniques that homeowners and professionals are using to reduce that energy loss.

To access the course, visit and click on the Home Energy 101 tab.

Visitors to the course site can view as many of the video clips as they wish. The clips average about five minutes each. To receive a certificate of completion, those taking the course will need to register, view all the clips and complete a knowledge review.

While the course is free to use, people have a number of incentives to complete it.

Gate City Bank has offered an added incentive. Those who complete the course by Aug. 31, 2011, are entitled to a certificate worth $50 off the closing costs on a Gate City Bank mortgage loan. More details and restrictions are provided on the Home Energy 101 course site.

This course is part of a pilot project developed by the North Dakota Alliance for Renewable Energy, North Dakota Department of Commerce and NDSU Extension Service in cooperation with Gate City Bank.
