Physics students conquer cardboard
For the past two weeks, Michelle Strand’s physics students at West Fargo High School have been learning the physics of fluids and what is necessary to float a boat.
Working in teams, the students constructed boats out of cardboard that two members of each team raced down and back across the L.E. Berger Pool for the inaugural Cardboard Boat Regatta on Monday evening.
There were 26 teams in the event. Some teams made it across the pool, and some sank almost immediately.
The top five times entered a final heat, with the winning team being determined by the lowest combined time of the two heats.
First place went to the “Cardboard Cru” team of Andrina Brogden, Miranda Wilcox, James Welch, Jodi Stende and Madison Adams.
Awards were also presented for the best looking boat, best dressed team, most creative design, team spirit and most spectacular sinking.
