Haley’s Hope recently had five tutors pass the certification for the Barton Reading and Spelling System. This is a research-based tutoring system designed specifically for people with dyslexia. Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects reading, writing and spelling.

Alison Kennedy has a degree in communicative disorders with a minor in sociology from the University of Wisconsin - River Falls. Elaine Theisen has a specific learning disability licensure from Minnesota State University Moorhead and her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Valley City State University. Pat Pieri is a certified Title I teacher for North Dakota. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Melanie Schacher has a business/marketing degree from Moorhead Technical College. Emily Kettner is a graduate from Minnesota State University Moorhead with a degree in early childhood education.

In order to be certified, tutors must have taken at least three students through level three of the Barton System and pass the rigorous testing process given by the developer of the program, Susan Barton. Haley’s Hope is a not for profit in West Fargo that helps people in all aspects of dyslexia.
