Needs great: Help stock local food pantries

All the talk of destruction and devastation caused by the tornadoes in the southern part of our country points out the drastic need for resources to assist in whatever way necessary in times of dire need, whether it's providing food, lodging, or simple supplies to get by on a day-to-day basis.

Locally, mail carriers are making an effort this weekend to assist with the need for an enhanced "food supply" in the FM area by conducting their 19th annual drive that will help fill the shelves at all the local food pantries.

Last year was a banner year for contributions with 70,000 pounds of food collected and delivered to the food banks throughout the drive in Moorhead, Fargo and West Fargo, including rural routes.

As with any drive the focus is always to outdo previous year's numbers.

This is where the public enters the picture, playing the main role in making or breaking this goal, and ensuring that no local individual will have to go without a meal.

Another real boon has been the full-time status of rural carriers that was implemented last year, with their collections always key to the success of the drive.

Food drive donation bags are being distributed this week in preparation for the actual pickup which will take place Saturday, May 14, as carriers are delivering the mail. Residents are asked to set out their bags filled with non-perishable food items early so they are not missed in the collection process.

The food will be taken back to the postal stations, for sorting and delivery to the food bank outlets that will include the Emergency Food Pantry, Dorothy Day House, and the Great Plains Food Bank.

Organizers attest to the fact that it is the action of the local citizens that annually make this combined effort work, simply because of the great giving generosity in donating a wide variety of foodstuffs.

Let's show them that we all possess that same giving conviction again this year by filling those bags to the brim and setting them out Saturday.

That one little action will make a huge impact in helping "stamping out hunger" in the lives of many.
