Community at its finest

It's hard to believe West Fest has already been around 20 years.

Quite a distinction and really amazing to watch the small celebration evolve and prosper, completely in sync with the ongoing community growth.

The interest in the event has also grown comparatively with thousands now showing up to line Sheyenne Street and take in all the event has to offer, in particular, the grand parade, which many would describe as the highlight of the daylong festivities.

The really nice aspect of this year's West Fest is the event leading up to it and the one succeeding on Sunday.

I am referring to the highly popular and overwhelmingly successful last in a series of Cruise Nights on Thursday evening, from 5 to 9 p.m., once again sure to fill a majority of the Sheyenne Street corridor, and the West Fargo Park District sponsored 6th annual Honkin Haulin Hands On Truck Expo planned for Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Arena.

In great part, West Fest is for the kids and the latter event will be the ideal cap to the weekend celebration.

Youngsters attending will be able to "get up close and personal" as they check out the over two dozen big trucks, tractors and construction equipment that will dot the Vets Arena parking lot. They will also receive their own driver's license and be able to enjoy carriage and barrel car rides, and an added bonus, the first two hundred kids checking in for the entirely free event will receive a complimentary T-shirt.

Everybody involved, from Park District staff to contributing sponsors Butler/Cat and Luther Family Ford, goes out of their way to oblige, accommodate and pique the interests of the hundreds of children attending.

Weather forecasts, which are subject to change this time of the year because of the transition from summer to more fall-like conditions, are indicating a degree of "niceness" for the variety of outdoor activities in advance of and surrounding the West Fest weekend.

With that in mind, West Fest 2011 and all that accompanies it indeed promises to be another great time, with the core area of "old downtown" West Fargo providing the perfect backdrop.

So if you are in the market for three days of great family fun and entertainment, cruise on down to Sheyenne Street Thursday evening and Saturday and then head on over to the Veterans Arena on Sunday for the perfect wrap to one of the finest community celebrations you will experience anywhere!
