On Feb. 2, national signing day, Northern State University head coach Tom Dosch announced that 27 student-athletes committed to join the Wolves for their 2011 football season.

West Fargo's Zach Neer was one of them.

"We are very excited about the new additions to the NSU football family," Dosch said.  "The overall athleticism of the group jumps out at me, as many of our signees are multi-sport athletes."

Neer is no exception. While his collegiate career may focus on football, Neer also was proficient at wrestling and baseball as a Packer.

Neer's high school football career was highlighted by a pair of All-Conference honors, as well as being selected to last fall's All-State team. As a captain his senior year, Neer proved proficient at offense and defense. On the receiving end, he led West Fargo in catches with 39, while tallying a touchdown and 560 yards of offense. He also averaged more than 12 yards a carry on 19 kick returns. Defensively, Neer picked off two passes, and was sixth on his team in tackles with 44.

Altogether, Neer recorded 74 career receptions for 1,063 yards on offense, and 90 tackles and five interceptions on defense.

This winter, Neer finished out his prep wrestling career by taking fourth at 152 pounds during the state tournament in February. It was his third state placing.

Next comes baseball, in which Neer also excels. He was out last season with an injury, but is ready to go this year as he takes his turn at catcher, pitcher and third base.

Zach is the son of Lori and Alan Neer, of Mapleton.

The Wolves are part of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, a Division II-

affiliated program. In 2010, NSU finished its football season fifth in its division, and tied for 13th in the NSIC with a 2-9 record.
