July 27, 1915-Jan. 8, 2008 Audubon native Roger Broberg, 92, of Henning, Minn., died on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at the Henning Golden Living Center. Roger was born the son of Albert and Yerda (Roberg) Broberg on July 27, 1915, at Audubon, and grew up in the Audubon area. He worked as a butter maker for Land O'Lakes Creamery before getting into the hardware business. He owned and operated Coast-to-Coast hardware stores in Henning, Wahpeton. N.D., Wheaton, Minn., and Fergus Falls. He married Mabel Gullan on Aug. 30, 1936 at the Assemblies of God Church in Fargo.
Feb. 1, 1918-Jan. 10, 2008 Anna S. Habedank, 89, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, January 10, 2008 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes. Anna Sophie Krabbenhoft was born to John and Sophie (Nagel) Krabbenhoft on Feb. 1, 1918 in Sebula, Iowa. She was raised in Sebula and married Alvin Habedank in Ada, Minn., on March 12, 1941. They farmed in Ada for many years, and Anna also worked at Herb's Café and the Gardner Hotel in Fargo, and did some house cleaning. The couple moved to Detroit Lakes in 1974, and Anna worked at Hills Corner Station.
March 18, 1945-Jan. 12, 2008 Charles H.L. "Chuck" Minge, 62, of Perham, died Saturday, January 12, 2008. Charles Harold Leonard Minge was born the son of Leonard and Evelyn (Dobes) Minge on March 18, 1945, in Shakopee, Minn. He lived in Jordan, Minn., until 1951, was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and moved to Delano, Minn., at the age of 6. He was confirmed at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Delano. Chuck went to country school and then to Delano High School. Chuck married Mae Opsahl in 1963, but later divorced.
Alan J. Koenig, 52, of Perham, died Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at his home. A memorial service will take place in the spring. Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, is in charge of the arrangements. Online tributes may be posted at the Web site, schoenebergerfuneralhome.com.
Feb. 3, 1915-Jan. 8, 2008 Ida M. Smith, 92, of rural Callaway, died Tuesday, January 8, 2007 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes. Ida Martha Golkowski was born to parents Carl and Dora (Steffen) Golkowski on Feb. 3, 1915 in Frazee. She was baptized and confirmed at Evergreen Lutheran Church, rural Frazee and attended District 90 country school in Becker County. After school she helped out local farmers with housework and cooking. Ida married Earl Smith in 1938. They moved to Stephen, Minn., where she worked at a local hotel.
Wadena will host its second Golden Gloves Boxing card this Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Wadena Armory, starting at 7:30 p.m. Wadena boxers will take on fighters from Fergus Falls, Brainerd, Leech Lake, Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud and Duluth, with 12 bouts scheduled. The main event pits 176-pound DeWayne Steward of Wadena against J.R. Robinson of Leech Lake. Other featured bouts will include 170-pound Trent Petro of Wadena vs.
June 26, 1924-Jan. 2, 2008 Eileen Thorpe, 83, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at Unity Hospital in Fridley, Minn. Eileen Miller was born to Herman and Nora (Flom) Miller on June 26, 1924 in Flom, Minn. She graduated from Waubun High School, and later from the Detroit Lakes Business College with a secretarial certificate; she then worked for the Northstar Dairy Co-op in Detroit Lakes. Eileen married Clifton Thorpe on April 29, 1949 in Twin Valley.
June 24, 1927-Jan. 6, 2008 Clarence J. Alder, 80, of Callaway, died Sunday, January 6, 2008 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes. Clarence Julian Alder was born to Alton and Mable (Peterson) Alder on June 24, 1927 in rural Rollag. He attended Woodland District 3 Country School near Rollag. Clarence served in the U.S. Army from 1945-47, during World War II. After the war he returned to the Rollag area and worked on various farms. On June 1, 1949 Clarence married Daisy Maulsby in Detroit Lakes.
Aug. 21, 1921-Jan. 6, 2008 Garfield D. Helgeson, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, January 6, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home of Detroit Lakes. Garfield Duane Helgeson was born to Knute and Alma (Tholen) Helgeson on Aug. 21, 1921 in Mayville, N.D. As a young boy, he moved with his family to the Tholen farm south of Audubon. In the spring of 1924, they moved east of Audubon, and then moved back to the Tholen farm in 1932. Garfield finished eight grades of school in Lake Center District 78. He graduated from Audubon High School in 1939. He was confirmed at St.
March 27, 1923-Jan. 8, 2008 Helen E. Houge, 84, of Detroit Lakes, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at Innovis Health in Fargo. Helen Esther Skulstad was born to Martin and Magna (Rismoen) Skulstad on March 27, 1923 on a farm near Dalton, Minn. She was baptized in Ten Mile Lake Church in Tumuli Township, Otter Tail County. Helen started country school in Underwood. In 1933, Helen moved with her family to Hamden Township, near Audubon. She was confirmed in October 1937 from Saron Lutheran Church, Audubon.
