Friends and family along with staff at Westside Elementary School will host a Westside Fun for Families Night on Thursday, May 2 to help the Dan and Heidi Schaeffer family. The family has experienced extreme and on-going hard times and stress for almost four years since Heidi was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. She has fought hard, and after a mastectomy, hysterectomy and chemotherapy, the cancer is now in remission. However, she is still taking Herceptin monthly to keep it at bay.
Cinco de Mayo, a lively Mexican festival, will be celebrated Saturday, May 4, at Faith Lutheran Church, 127 2nd Ave. E., West Fargo, beginning with a silent auction at 5:30 p.m. and a Mexican dinner served at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 6-12. Children up through age five are free.

West Fargo High School student Elsa Bollinger was notified last week that she was chosen as one of only 42 high school students to attend the 2013 Asian American Journalists Association's (AAJA) prestigious JCamp. Bollinger is the first student from North Dakota to be chosen to attend JCamp, since its inception in 2001. There have been more than 450 graduates since the program began.
Jordan Shive of West Fargo was recognized at the Jamestown College (Jamestown, N.D.) Honors Convocation held April 11 as Jimmies Representative. Established in 1883, Jamestown College is a private, liberal arts four-year college granting bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, and bachelor of science in nursing degrees as well as master's degrees in education.
