Jennifer Dufner took first place in the 4K girls' race in the Andrew Nelson Metro Classic Thursday at Lindenwood Park. Dufner won with a time of 14:48.08. The standout junior is ranked No. 5 in the Class A girls individual poll and said her performance Thursday was especially satisfying considering she hadn't been on a run in three days. The West Fargo golf team took first place at the East Region tournament last Wednesday and carries the momentum of winning its last two meets into state tournament play, which began Tuesday and continues today at Edgewood Golf Course in Fargo. West Fargo's Cole Johnson finished one stroke behind Wahpeton's Justin Nelson for second place in the individual rankings. The Packers scored 309 points—two strokes better than Grand Forks Red River and Fargo Shanley. The top six teams qualify for state. "The kids played well," West Fargo co-head coach Chuck Gad said.
After losing her freshman track and field season to injury, West Fargo sophomore Akealy Moton made up for lost time by winning state championships in the shot put and javelin. Moton's day at the shot put, where she opened the finals with a throw of 47 feet, two inches, which was good enough to win the event. As an eighth grader, she scratched all three of preliminary throws and missed the finals. "After I got into finals, I was much more confident," Moton said.
